課程介紹 Introduction
為期七週的 ALLEX 華語教師培訓課程實際上是由三門研究所的課: Chinese Pedagogical Grammar, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language ,和 Teaching Preparation & Practice 所組成,一共4.5 credits 也就是你在暑假七週拿了三門WASHU研究所課的意思,順利上完還能拿到WASHU成績單。
A seven-week teacher training consists of three graduate-level courses; Chinese Pedagogical Grammar, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, and Teaching Preparation & Practice with a total of 4.5 credits. That is, you will receive an official transcript from WASHU if you passed and completed all the courses.

暑期訓練相當密集,壓力也相對的高,課程週一到週五,早上九點到下午五點結束,視狀況而定有時可能會延後一點下課,而中午有一小時的休息時間。每週會有小測驗、考試、觀摩實察課、作業,還有試教。簡言之,訓練蠻全面蠻完整的,從理論到實作讓你為大學的教職做好準備。
接下來我們一一來看各個課程的細部內容吧!
This summer training is quite intensive: classes start from 9 am to 5 pm with a one-hour lunch break. Sometimes depending on the schedule and discussion, professors may dismiss class a bit later if we have a lively discussion about the topics. Each week, there will be several quizzes, tests, observations, assignments, and teaching demonstrations (Demo). In short, it is a very comprehensive training that equips you with all the things you need to teach Chinese at a college level.
Let’s take a deeper look at these three courses!
漢語語法教學 Chinese Pegagogical Grammar

這堂課主要會帶你認識中文的語法,課堂上教授會善用很多例子來反問學生,或者會提出在校教課時學生常提問的問題來讓我們腦力激盪一番,想像如果學生今天問你這個問題你會如何解釋呢?
This course will introduce you to Chinese grammar and professors will bring up many examples and questions that are asked frequently by college students in their Chinese class or during office hours. We are asked to brainstorm that how we are going to explain those questions if our students ask us.
同時,會針對特定的ㄧ些語法難點提供例子,讓我們更容易理解並消化,每週會有固定的語法和拼音聽寫考試。考試題目會需要你用英文解釋語法以及提供ㄧ些例子說明,這個方式其實變相的在幫助我們內化知識準備之後的教學,因為日後當學生問問題時也是需要解釋跟提供例子給他們。下面給大家ㄧ些之前課堂上有討論過的例子。
At meanwhile, Professors will also provide some certain grammars that are difficult to explain with examples. These examples are simple, easy, and clear and do help us better understand the grammar. There are weekly quizzes including listening dictation for pinyin and grammar explanation, most of the time you may need to provide some examples along with your answers. I think these quizzes are helpful to our future teaching since we have to digest the knowledge and output to form our own answers. The following examples are what we discuss in class.
1. “學” 和 “學習” 哪裡不一樣? 如何使用?
2. 英文都是 Two ,但中文為什麼有時候用 “兩” ,有時候用 “二” ,該怎麼分辨?
3. “在” 這個字在下面的句子裡有什麼不同? 請解釋:
我在台北的一間貿易公司上班。
我在美國是大學生
你在哪兒學習?
至於這門課考試的 分,只要上課認真有做筆記,記下不在 Powerpoint 上的例子或是解釋,考試前有複習,其實都不會有什麼困難。
Actually, as long as you pay close attention in class, take notes for what is not on the slides, and review the content before taking the quizzes, you should be fine.
授課時我們搭配的教科書是 Basic Spoken Chinese 和 Basic Written Chinese 這本書。
These two are the textbooks we use in EASIA 410 Course.

對外漢語教學 Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

培訓的這一門課將會學到一個教學法叫做 Performed Culture Approach 簡稱 PCA。如果之前是念語言相關教學科系的同學特別是英語教學/華語教學,那麼你會覺得這個教學法和 Comunicative Language Teaching Approach ( CLT ) 互動式教學法有點類似,學習過程中使用目標語的溝通互動很重要,但 PCA 著重在把 Target Language ( TL )目標語的文化融入你的教學內容中,並且強調 ACT 以及 Authentic Material 的重要性。
In this TCFL course, you will learn a teaching method called the “Performed Culture Approach” (PCA). If you have studied in education or other related majors especially TESOL/TEFL/TCFL, then you will notice that PCA and Communicative Language Teaching Approach (CLT) have something in common. However, PCA emphasizes blending the target language’s culture (TL) in your language class and focuses on the importance of “Act” and “Authentic material.”
也就是你要如何設定一個真實情境給學生練習,讓學生反覆練習成自然,之後等他們到目標語的國家可以很自然地和母語者使用目標語溝通,並且溝通過程中不會因文化差異而造成中文母語者不舒服或反感,這裡只能很簡略地這樣跟大家帶過,如果對此教學法有興趣我可以提供教科書的名稱給大家。
That is, how to design an authentic context for students to act it out (perform), and guide them practicing communicating in target language within appropriate culture until they are able to respond naturally in the target language environment are important. By doing this, language learners are less likely to make native speakers feel uncomfortable or being offended during the conversation since language learners have been practicing target culture along with the language. Here I can only give such a brief introduction about the course, if you are interested in this textbook, I can provide the name of the book below.
由此可知這門課是偏理論的課程,會比其他兩門課程的閱讀量還要多,你會需要讀一本叫做 Performed Cultulre Approach 的教科書。(但是比起之後你要到你的 Host University攻讀碩士的量,也只是小菜一碟而已,可以當作開學前的適應跟暖身練習)
From here, you can learn that this course is more theory-based, and you have to buy the textbook called “Performed Culture Approach.” The amount of reading would be much more than the other two courses (Well, compared to the graduate student reading amount, this is really just a piece of cake, but you can take this as a warmup before the semester starts)
當時給我們授課的教授剛好就是推廣這個教學法的教授 Marie Noda Sansei,上她的課務必要事先預習並把有問題的地方記下來在課堂上發問,上課的過程教授也會點人問問題,重點來了! 這門課除了中文組的同學外,還會有日文組跟韓文組的同學,所以一定要好好準備回答得出來!
The professor who gave the lecture in 2017 is Marie Noda Sansei and you must preview and take notes in advance because she may call students randomly to answer the questions. I would suggest not just previewing the content but also being ready to answer the questions since Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Allies will have this class together in a big classroom and it would be quite embarrassing if you are unable to answer the professor’s questions.
同樣地,這門課程每週也會固定有小考要準備,但是題目有的會有陷阱騙人所以要細心作答,我就是太粗心了! 簡答題切記不是照抄書上的答案,記得要內化後用自己的話說出來,因為教授出題上會要求只能用2~3句話回答,絕對不是量多就好,答案的質比量重要!
The course EASIA 412 has weekly quizzes as well. Be careful! The questions from the quizzes sometimes may appear tricky questions, you may get tricked if you don’t read them thoroughly. One more thing, for the essay or short answer questions, it is better for you to answer with your own words. Do not copy the sentences from the textbook because the professor may request the answers for only 2~3 sentences. Keep in mind that “Quality is more important than quantity!”

教學準備和練習 Teaching Preparation & Practice

這門課會告訴我們該如何撰寫課堂的 This course will teach you how to write
1. Syllabus/Weekly Schedule:
syllabus裡面包含課程介紹、上課的地點時間、 Weekly Schedule、Objective、課堂規則、教授的 office hour、考試報告及出席率的比重等等。其中有一項作業是要你去了解你之後要去的 Host University 然後根據你要授課的課程繳交 Syllabus和Weekly Schedule,這個練習可以幫助我們提早做課程的準備,因為大學第一堂課就是會先發 Syllabus 給學生。
2. 考試內容:
平日可以有拼音的聽寫、對話填空、口語的考試、上台報告、聽力練習等等,教授會教我們什麼樣的課程內容大概適合出什麼題型比較能測出學生的程度,怎麼出好題目的技巧包括選擇題 (Multiple Choice)、是非題 (True/False)、填空題 (Fill-in-the-blank or Cloze)、開放答案題( Open-ended Question),並提供範例現場討論。還有教我們期中與期末的口語考試 (Oral Interview) 要怎麼策畫和如何實行。
期中和期末的的口語考試是以一對一的模式進行,也是對學生來說非常重要的評量,計分方式除了學生要會使用目標語之外,還有很多細部的面向都要算在計分項目裡,像是發音的聲母韻母聲調、 socio-cultural appropriateness 匹如說進門是否有敲門、請進請做時有沒有說謝謝、雙手接名片、句子架構正確性、回答的反應快慢、聽力方面的理解力等等。
3. 考試評分標準及方式:
除了傳統的紙筆小考測驗之外,會教我們課堂的 daily grading 加上評語,這可以讓學生知道自己當天的課堂表現如何並且哪裡需要多加強。這個部分會提供我們評分標準的 Scale 跟 Criteria ,然後分小組做 cases study 練習評分給評語,每組會上台寫下你們組對於一個 case 的評分,以及解釋為什麼給這個分數,最後教授會給一個他的分數以及講解他為什麼給這個分數讓大家參考。
4. Lesson Plan: 沒有制式的規定,你可以用你的方式先寫教案,在 Prep Demo 前會繳交給兩位教授, Prep Demo 結束後如果有什麼問題,教授提供你意見如何修改會比較順暢,或者有的教授會分享他的教案是怎麼寫的。
5. Feedback: 教學時對於學生該給 Post-performance feedback or In-line feedback? 該如何拿捏? 通常如果學生在測驗之前所學的內容,或是做presentation,我們會把錯的地方記在 clipboard 上,等他們發表完或是整個測驗完後再給予糾正;如果學新的內容,大多時候傾向於立即糾錯給予回饋,當然以上這個只是非常概括簡略的敘述,培訓時還會提到更多內容像是 Intervention 的時機、 Internal/External Error 生成原因、 Self-correction 狀況等等會有更詳細的內容,大致上給回饋沒有一定的標準化答案,大家還是要根據自己實際課堂上的真實情形去做調整應對,不過最重要的是要給學生 Constructive & Positive Feedback! 學中文不容易,要給學生多一點鼓勵和信心 🙂
再來最重要的就是試教 Next the most important thing: Demonstration
七週的ALLEX 華語教師培訓讓你有數次上台試教的經驗,ALLEX 在課程安排方面很貼心地提供漸進式的試教方式,讓你慢慢熟悉一套新的教學模式。時間長度從第一次的5分鐘、7分鐘、15分鐘到最後一堂課時間;教學方式從第一次的模仿到變成獨立完成自己寫教案上台教。為了避免第一次接觸 PCA 加上第一次的試教不知道如何起頭,所以 ALLEX 提供一個模仿的方式讓你入門,隨著課程的推進慢慢熟悉之後會越來越上手就會讓你獨立。
You will have several opportunities to teach on stage, and ALLEX arrages the teaching demonstration in a gradual way to help you get familiar with the PCA model. You will start from a 5 minutes teaching demo at first, and 7 minutes、15 minutes, and then to the whole class. Besides, you begin your teaching frist by imitating prof. and then become more and more independent. The goal of imitation teaching at the first time is aim to help you get a clear mind about how to get started teaching with PCA model and hopefully you will be able to conduct the class on your own gradually after getting familiar with the PCA.
1. 試教的內容: ALLEX 會事先給你 Schedule ,你可以預先知道你什麼時候要試教還有教的範圍,不需要擔心。
2. 試教的對象:
分 Prep Demo 跟正式試教,
Prep Demo: 中文組同學在台下當你的學生,模擬真實上課的狀況,教授會在台下看你教學一教完馬上給你反饋,同時在場的中文組同學也會給你意見做修正,讓你可以在正式試教的時候更順利。通常行程的安排是你 Prep Demo 完的隔天就是正式試教,頂多隔一兩天。
正式試教: 台下就會是美國大學生,或是日文組韓文組的同學,這樣子的狀況真的可以模擬日後教學的狀況非常有幫助,正式試教會有兩到三位同學在場幫你錄影以及觀摩你的課然後寫 Observation Report ,教授當下也會在台下看你教,這次正式的試教就是要打成績的囉! 所以也會在教學平台 Moodle 上看到你這門課試教的分數和評語。
3. 試教練習: 只有 Prep Demo 做練習然後就正式教課當然是不夠的,可以善用日文韓文組同學的這個資源哈哈! 我們當時在宿舍時,會找日文組的同學來當我們的試教練習對象,在他們不會說中文的情況下,可以比較具體的告訴我們哪裡引導做得不夠、指令或是場景設定夠不夠清楚,上台前有這樣的練習也是很有幫助的。
4. 試教的教具: 這個部分要自己製做,但是通常場景會用 PPT 來呈現,教具也是字卡、卡片而已,都是越簡單清楚呈現越好,不需要花很多時間在製作當句上面,畢竟我們的重點在語言教學不是背景教具。
5. 試教的語言: 必須是 100% 目標語,就是全中文,包含教具。
Weekly Schedule Weekly Schedule
雙重身分的我們該怎麼拿捏分際? What’s my status on campus, a teacher or a student?
因為我們的雙重身分所以在面對學生時要非常注意界線。當你在修研究所的課時,你是學生所以可以跟你的同學一起 Hangout 。但是在你的教課的課堂上你的身分是中文老師,所以學生邀請你去參加私人的聚會會是活動的時候盡量避免,可以跟學生感情好,但是不能讓學生越線,關係太好難免在打成績的時候會有失公平或是會被其他學生說話,我們要盡量避免發生這種情況。
Due to the dual status in school, we have to be careful when we get along with students and classmates. For graduate courses, I think it is fine and reasonable to hangout with your classmates as long as they are not in your Chinese class. However, you should probably avoid attending parties or private gathering held by your students. You can get along with your students but still should have a clear boundaries that you are a Chinese teacher not his/her friend just in case some other students may complain about you being not fair when it comes to grading.
通常我們當 TA/GA 的身分,若是有提供住宿的學校,正常來說都會把我們跟大學生分開,不會安排住在一起,因為美國大學生真的有時週四就開始開趴了。若是拿 Stipend要在校外自己租房子的,我真的強烈建議還是找研究生一起住,跟大學生真的會讓你的研究生生涯過得很辛苦。(根據我個人碰到的租屋經驗,沒有一起住只是樓上樓下鄰居就很吵了,因為木製的房子隔音不是很好!)
As for accomodation, since we are TA/GA, the university would normally assign us to live with other graduate studnets or faculty, if your university provides you accomodation. For me, I get stipend from my host university. They do not offer dorm for me, so I have to rent an apartment off campus. If you have the same situation as me, I would highly recommend getting roomates who are also graduate studetns; otherwise, there is a high possibility that you will have a tough graduate life being bothering by the loud music and endless parties.
